![]() ![]() Circumnavigating the lake will take you past Locarno in Switzerland and its quite a nice drive which will take you all of the day. Lago Maggiore is worthwhile exploring and if staying there you could also visit Lago d'Orta which isn't as touristy and known to locals as a weekend destination. I don't stay in Milan but villages along Lago Maggiore called Arona or Stressa as I'm usually on my way to Zermatt in Switzerland. ![]() I am assuming you are flying into Malpensa and there is a train station at the airport to take you into the city - both an express as well as a cheaper local service. I use Hertz and they have an office near the main train station (as well as the airports). It may be an impediment in Milan so get it as you are leaving the city. If you can handle driving on the other side of the road, then I would rent a car. Turin/ Torino is also rated highly, again not visited myself however heard many Italian and English person rate highly. Verona is quintessential Italy, full of art, architecture, food, shopping, piazzas, truly stunning and close to Lake Garda, which I have nt visited but do have it on the list! Boats link the towns, eg Bellagio to Varenna - Menaggio etcīergamo and Citta Alta is a preserved but very much living medieval hilltop city, very atmospheric with good restaurants. The hydrofoil from Como to Bellagio or vice versa is worth doing in its own right just to explore the lakes' setting. ![]() On the Lake itself, the famous towns of Bellagio and Varenna are highlights with great locations, shops and restaurants - just google images!, there are plenty of small villages in bewteen, each with a unique character and amazing views/ setting on the lake. Milan is a gateway, from there you can access anywhere in Italy, regarding Northern Italy along with Milan's worthy sights, I loved Lake Como - Como town is very interesting, lake frot location, home of Italian silk and has a funicular railway upto Burante offering stunning views. I love Northern Italy, doing another trip soon, however note I have relied on public transport, here's a few ideas I hope help research and planning your trip. ![]()
